wow this sentinel island news story really blew up on social media. american dude, possibly a missionary, travels to meet a community that historically has resisted contact from outsiders and ends up getting himself killed….

i mean aside from the fact that he could have wiped out the whole community by bringing them in contact with diseases that have no immunity for, he also had zero concerns for his own safety and welfare?? apparently he got shot with arrows the first time, returned to his boat, and then at night decided he would TRY AGAIN like what a fucking idiot

He deserved to die imo, people including anthropologists have died trying to make contact before…and it was made illegal to contact the people of Sentinel Island in 2006… I have no qualms

he really was lost in the colonizer sauce like he thought he could win those people over by bringing a soccer ball and scissors like the fact that he had to bribe someone to take him there in the first place should’ve told him not to do it but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What is the point of trying to go to an unconnected people anyway and with a fucking Bible when they speak a dead language and have been chilling for thousands of years colonizers are crazy he got what he was asking for he went to see Jesus

“The British colonial occupation of the Andaman Islands decimated the tribes living there, wiping out thousands of tribespeople, and only a fraction of the original population now survive. So the Sentinelese fear of outsiders is very understandable.”

[…]

“It’s not impossible that the Sentinelese have just been infected by deadly pathogens to which they have no immunity, with the potential to wipe out the entire tribe,” said Mr Corry.

just want to highlight the history of the situation and the potential consequences for the people this man has endangered

Beware of scam artists in the occult.

Recently raven-conspiracy has been trying to pass off his spirit shop as a legitimate form of witchcraft. The truth of the matter is spirit shops are nothing but lies and they prey upon vulnerable, young, and lonely people new to the Arte. People that are new don’t have the ropes yet. They don’t know what’s legit and what’s not. And if they’re lonely and looking for something to fill the void, these shops draw many of them in. Emotionally vulnerable people.

I approached him after a friend of mine got asked his opinion on spirit shops and as a seasoned occultist he said the same as I about them. It was probably raven-conspiracy because the next thing you know he was making vagueposts about practitioners he liked but how hurt he was about them putting down “his tradition.” There is no tradition when it comes to spirit shops. None. Research it. It is fakery. Malicious fakery. There are some occultists who charge for their services but they are services and are usually vetted with many years of experience and don’t demand cash up front. They don’t “sell” spirits. If they do–run!

Don’t get me wrong. I was pretty rude. But fucking ripping people off with scams is part of why no one takes magic seriously. Post my messages, raven-conspiracy. I don’t care. This isn’t shit I wouldn’t have said to him publicly. He is a scam artist. I would have given him a chance if he would have stepped up and talked to people about why they hurt him. I have every right to be angry with him. Not just on a personal level for being petty with my friends, another who he accused of cursing him (which is ridiculous by the way; only lolcows curse people on the internet) after they wouldn’t teach him any more tech realizing he was a con man. When you are trying to get your scam recognized as a legitimate form of witchcraft: you are harming the Arte. And I take that pretty personally too. Seriously stop. If you want to move on unfollow me and move on. Yeah, I was rude. But I gave him some privacy to resolve it and what did he do? He was avoidant and ran away. Because he’s a financial predator and someone had the audacity to see through it. Now he’s airing everything in the same breath he dramatically wipes away his crocodile tears and go “I’m washing my hands of this.” So which is it? It’s a display by a manipulator who wants your cash. And has no respect for the Arte.

I’m more upset with his scamming bullshit because truth be told he’s actually a half competent practitioner which means not only is he stealing people’s money, he’s making a dangerous situation…with the most vulnerable people. He needs to back up and reassess his foolishness but I can’t see someone this invested in fraudelence seeing why people are upset with him.

Though, to his credit, at least he wasn’t vagueing me. Still being avoidant. But step up to identify the person who has a problem with what you’re doing, raven-conspiracy. You won’t though because you know what you’rw doing is wrong. VERY unethical. I’m rude but I’m not stealing from lonely people who want spirit pals. That’s just pathetic and it does deserve harshness. It is low.

If someone tries to sell you a sell you a spirit and has any talent not only do they simply want your money but they don’t care about the possibility of putting you in harm’s way without your knowledge.

I will NOT sit around while people are hurt by someone who is basically preying upon the weak. Secondary to being petty to my friends. Very secondary. This is a serious matter.

Stay safe and keep your wallets close.

I wish you were exaggerating about the danger here, but you are not. I’m not…nearly as competent as thedesertgod is here so my focus will be different. There is very obvious and very non-magickal danger here that I think has been under-emphasized in all this.

The population of people who are most likely to “buy spirits” is going to be the active participants in the metaphysical community on this website. That is, the group of young adults age 17-25. This is an incredibly vulnerable, incredibly turbulent, and incredibly vital time period in someone’s life. It is when they’re laying a social bedrock that, in way more cases than you’d like, will have to serve them for their entire future. Social isolation after college is a serious problem in the USA right now. And this population is doubly vulnerable. An even casual perusal will reveal staggeringly high rates of psychological disorders and vulnerabilities in the population.

Seriously, “selling spirits” to the emotionally vulnerable strongly encourages the development of maladaptive daydreaming as a coping mechanism. Especially when you roll something like the sunk-cost fallacy into it. The only likely outcome of these sales is entrenching a pattern of either social isolation or an inability to handle being alone for even small periods of time. These are both incredibly unhealthy and, when you get older, incredibly dangerous patterns to fall into.

People need people. Isolation is a killer. Alienation can destroy a life as surely as too many bottles of bourbon can. Denying the likely consequences of claiming to sell invisible spirit companions to vulnerable young people can only be an act of either deceit or deliberate obtuseness. This world is cruel and that is precisely why we must be kind.

To reiterate the metaphysical dangers though, here is a very very very simple issue with spirit shops even if you, somehow, were actually selling spiritual companionship:

The kinds of spirits I can think of who would agree to something like that are not the kind of spirits you want around. And spirits can do very real, very serious damage. A period of unwanted spiritual contact lasting a short period of ~1 week had lasting impacts that almost destroyed my life and left me with severe PTSD that through hard work I have finally turned into mild PTSD. At best you are gonna be selling someone a case of astral fleas. At worst your gonna ruin a life.

From the bottom of my fucking heart though: This man is a predator. As a reformed predator myself, it’s pretty easy to spot those traits in others if they don’t hide them well, and Raven-conspiracy is exceptionally bad at that, probably because he isn’t doing it entirely consciously. The shrill sob-stories, vengeful histrionics, and convenient rewriting of events to fit a narrative of victimization are all the mark of an amateurish and unsophisticated scrabble for narcissistic supply.

And what those predatory traits mean is that he will be using his shops as a tool to secure a client base, which he will then trap in a cycle where his services are used to soothe the very emotional wounds that he is exacerbating. Thereby creating a stable revenue source from a psychologically dependent target. If this hasn’t happened at least 2 or 3 times with his clients I will be pleasantly surprised.

I have been alerted to the fact that raven-conspiracy is a woman.

Though not really relevant to anything said above, I felt it bears mentioning here.

raven-conspiracy is ripping people off: the with receipts edition!

So I realize I have the burden of proof here making this post. So let’s take a stroll through raven-conspiracy’s shop and blog and see what she has to offer, shall we?

One of the first things I found was this alarming ask in her archives, offering to, as a complete stranger thousands of miles away, bind spirits to people:

Raven decided to dance around the fact she sells imaginary friends by saying she “conjures spirits for others”. That is not what I am pointing out to you all here. This is binding a spirit to a person. This is serious. Probably a person that doesn’t know what the fuck that entails. But she’s also side stepping that she ever sold spirit companions despite admitting it herself in her blog several times and giving advice to people who have been scammed by other spirit shops like hers:

What? You mean your imaginary friend isn’t real because there’s no actual spirit inside of it? It’s almost like…it’s a fucking scam. And there’s absolutely nothing going on with whatever shitty trinket you purchased.

Here she is playing martyr to herself for running a spirit shop:

“Everyone believes you’re like that”. Well miss Raven. Let’s take a look at your actual wares, shall we? Then we can judge for ourselves how ethical and talented you are at selling spirit companions. (Spoiler alert: it would be hilarious if it wasn’t so fucking unethical and disgusting.)

Note the hefty prices. Here’s a catalogue of the kinds of spirits you can buy from Raven. Try not to laugh:

But wait! There’s more! Terrible low tier fantasy art with DnD sounding character descriptions to match your new imaginary friend!

All for the low low price of 25 American dollars. Yes, you too can own a fucking dragon. Or, give your money to Raven and people like her for a weird placebo effect of thinking anything at all has changed except your pocket being that much lighter.

Oh, remember when Raven tried to say “most of what I do is free”? She was lying about that too and completely full of shit. What’s free then? Her giveaways. That’s it.

Anyone with eyes and any modicum of magical experience or sense at all can see these spirit companions are transparent, but more alarmingly that she is selling the service of binding people to spirits like it’s a desirable thing. This is the same as pacting, as in any infernal grimoire. There is a keen difference between binding a spirit to you and binding yourself to it. This is insanity. A scam at best and something horrific at worst.

Everybody has to make a living. But this is exactly what I said it is–fraudalent, predatory, dangerous, and unethical.

As @kab-niel pointed out, Raven has, as of 3pm CST today, taken the link to her shop down from her blog. Probably because she didn’t want anybody to see what she was doing and that I was right about her behavior. The shop is said to be closed “due to a family emergency.” That probably means she’s going to have to come up with another way to make money off of vulnerable young pagans and occultists without being caught.

I hope Raven stops preying on people but manipulators rarely change. That’s why I was angry. That’s why I confronted her. That’s why @cardiochitinous had every right to be appalled and why her points were relevant. That’s why people stopped helping her once they saw this. That’s why she doesn’t get to play victim. That’s why she doesn’t get to change her story a million times.

People like this hurt the Arte and they hurt others. The occult is filled with exploitative people waiting to take advantage of the naive and vulnerable. Do not let them.
