I seriously don’t understand why most people and even Harry believe that Snape was brave.Snape behaved awfully not just to Harry but to all of his students , and I would truly admire him if his “love” for Lily was really shown , like protecting Harry since he was abandoned by Dumbledore to the Dursleys, or really having him protected or informed even upon Voldemort so Harry didn’t feel so alone on this matter, facing the greatest evil alone! Seriously why does everyone forgive Snape for his disgusting character just because at his death moment shared his love for Lily to her son? Why does that make him brave? Did he do anything to honor Lily who he so “much loved” ?? No! He was a cocky bastard and for me nothing justifies Albus Severus Potter’s name , named after the “bravest” Slytherin headmaster he knew. Just no. I thought J.K.R. Wrote Harry’s character in a way he is shown to us as a smart and brave and lovable and charismatic person but honestly , naming his son after Dumbledore and Snape was the stupidest thing he ever did.

Do you actually not understand and you wish someone would explain it to you, or are you just posting because you don’t like the character and you want to have a rant because other people perceive the series differently to yourself?

Because if you genuinely don’t understand, I’m happy to explain – but I wouldn’t want to waste everyone’s time if you’re not actually interested.

What exactly do I need understand? Yes I despise Snape as a character everything he did was wrong, and how exactly did he honor Lily’s memory? He and Albus abandoned Harry, Severus was a death eater and at “the good side” he never opposed to one or another and he never denied his beliefs as a death eater but it’s not that why I’m furious with the cursed child , it’s that I really do not understand why Harry would name his son after a man how really did nothing for him. I don’t want you to see this as an argument it’s just what I think but I would gladly hear why you really believe that Severus in the end was a decent Man.

Your initial post started with, “

I seriously don’t understand why most people and even Harry believe that Snape was brave.” – and I was asking whether it was a genuine question.

And it appears from the rest of your post, it was…so here goes.  🙂

Severus Snape wasn’t a nice man, nor was he an attractive man, nor was he always correct in his thoughts.  But he was most certainly brave.

Upon making the wrong decision (for a myriad of reasons) as a teenager, he changed his mind.  Some people decry the fact that Snape was motivated to change his ways because Lily was threatened, suggesting that wasn’t a good enough reason – but it’s possible that they forget that Dumbledore sat along the same trajectory as a youth; he was quite happy to see Muggles subjugated by wizarding kind, yet was drawn onto the correct path due to his sister’s death.

Whatever Snape’s motivations for defecting, once he defected, he stayed true to Dumbledore and the Order – and didn’t once waver from the cause; even when his ultimate aim (keep Lily alive) failed, and even when the goal he’d been working towards for the rest of his life (keep Harry alive) was shown to be a folly.  If Snape had been a genuine Death Eater, upon learning from Dumbledore that Harry had to die, it would’ve been a perfect moment for him to turn back – after all, if he still believed in the politics of his youth, sticking with Dumbledore’s plan would’ve made no sense.

But he didn’t.  He stayed true.

For most of the series, Snape either worked as a spy or knew he would have to return as a spy, so it would be impossible for him to publicly decry the stance of the Death Eaters, as he was supposed to be masquerading as one.  He did, however, in the safety of his study, rebuke Headmaster Black for referring to Hermione as a Mudblood – and he didn’t appear to show any difference in his behaviour towards the Muggleborn students during the rest of the series.  He might’ve been a git, but he was a git to everyone.

It’s interesting to note that when Snape defects, he begs Dumbledore not to kill him upon sight without listening to what he had to say.  It seems a curious stance for him to take, given that Dumbledore is renowned for giving people second chances.  Is it, perhaps, that Voldemort drums it into his Death Eaters that there is no escape, and that’s how Dumbledore would greet them in an effort to prevent them from thinking of defecting?

After all, as Sirius says, “You don’t just hand in your notice of resignation to Voldemort.  It’s a lifetime of service or death.”  Which puts a rather different spin on Snape’s defection; he went to Dumbledore to beg for Lily’s life, knowing that in doing so, he was risking his own – both at the hand of Dumbledore, and…if he ever found out…Voldemort.

Dumbledore requested that he spy for him, and Snape did – and did enough that Dumbledore was sufficiently pleased with him, and vouched for him at his trial.

We learn that Snape was told by Dumbledore that Voldemort would return.  Not at any point does Snape truly believe that it’s all over and he can stay at Hogwarts and have a quiet life; he knows why Dumbledore is keeping him around, and what he will be expected to do.

Additionally, Snape willingly takes up a new mission: to keep Harry alive.  He does so throughout the first few books, even when the threat of Voldemort isn’t apparent – whether it’s refereeing at quidditch (PS) to watch over Harry, to berating Harry for sneaking out of Hogwarts without permission whilst a killer is on the loose (PoA).

He ran down to the shack in Prisoner of Azkaban, as soon as he realised the kids were in danger.  He fully believed them to be in the company of a werewolf and an escaped murderer – the same murderer he partly blames for the death of Lily – both of whom were sworn enemies of his – and one of whom had already attempted to murder him as a teenager.  He didn’t stop for assistance; he ran.

In Goblet of Fire, we meet Karkaroff – also an ex-Death Eater.  Many Death Eaters were imprisoned, many more pretended they’d been Imperio’d.  But Karkaroff and Snape are interesting, because both claimed to have turned traitor – the former offering up names in return for his own escape; the other claiming to have been working for Dumbledore all along.

Karkaroff doesn’t dare return to Voldemort knowing what he had done.  But Snape returns to the Dark Lord, all whilst knowing that he delivered the half prophecy, he begged for Lily’s exemption, he stated he was an undercover spy for Dumbledore – and then he turns up late…and he knows that he’s not truly returning; he knows he’s returning to spy.  And he does all of this, to face a wizard who can read minds – who was “the greatest Legilimens” in the worwld.

Most impressively, Snape continues this charade for years, convincing all and sundry that he is a genuine Death Eater – but most importantly, convincing Voldemort.  He becomes his most trusted adviser, ensuring that Dumbledore can feed Voldemort anything he wants.  Snape then willingly murders the only man who could vouch for him; the only man who believed in his innocence – all to further the war effort.  He then subversively works to aid Harry whilst deep undercover, and does all he can to ensure the safety of as many people as possible – e.g. saving Lupin, turning Ginny et al over to Hagrid.  He did this whilst everyone hated and despised him.

To say Snape did nothing for Harry is a gross misunderstanding of the series.  Without Snape, Harry would’ve perished far sooner – and if not before Order of the Phoenix, most certainly in the Department of Mysteries.  Dumbledore was away from Hogwarts, McGonagall was incapacitated, and Harry had gone haring off with the rest of the kids without a second word to anyone.  The only reason the Order appeared there was because Snape contacted them – and if he hadn’t, they would’ve been easily overpowered by the Death Eaters.

It would make this post even longer than it’s already ridiculous length to fully explain each of the individual points that Snape did which led Harry to calling him brave, so I will say that it is surely enough that he faces down one of the world’s greatest wizards, and repeatedly lies to his face, knowing that one slip will see him murdered.

You don’t have to like Snape as a character, but he did absolutely everything he could to keep Harry alive with little regard for his own safety – and that’s why Harry recognises his efforts, and names his son after him.

“I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you.  Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe.”
